The Coalition Needs your Support!

Dear Coalition Supporter:

We need your help.

First, they turned the sublime openness of the National Mall into a permanent construction site that’s starting to look like Disneyland, D.C.

Then, the first week of September — two weeks after the Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance — they opened up the Mall to a tasteless extravaganza of electronic advertising, football rah-rah and a mini strip tease. The National Park Service broke its own rules about commercializing the Mall, and may do it again. They just don’t get it.

Fortunately, the media is getting it. And that’s the good news. Even before the NFL desecration, some members of the press were beginning to write about what is happening on the Mall. But that appalling event woke up even more editorial writers, columnists, radio and TV reporters – even the conservative McLaughlin Group.

Not since the World War II Memorial fight has the Coalition been so busy answering press calls, doing radio call-in shows and TV news shows, and meeting newspaper editors one on one. Never before have we had such an opportunity to remind America of the historic purpose of the Mall and to halt this desecration. As we educators says, “This is a teachable moment.”

Now, more than ever, we need your help. October is a big month for us. We need funds to announce our Second Annual State of the Mall Report and to distribute it far and wide. There’s work to be done on our website, one of our strongest assets. A short film about the Mall is in the works. We need staff assistance. Longer range, we are preparing for a major fund-raising campaign and membership campaign.

And we are launching a new effort to start a National Mall Conservancy.

All this and more is happening on a shoestring, But we’re making progress. Finally we have a chance to get ahead of the curve.

Right now we need a booster-shot of cash. The Coalition is a nonprofit, 501c3 corporation. Please make your tax exempt contribution  by mail to:

Help us send a wake-up message to the bureaucrats and the politicians who have forgotten their history. Don’t let “America’s Great American Way” be sold to the highest bidder.

Time is running out to Save Our Mall. Your Mall. As Chris Knight of the LA Times put it, “If the politicians won’t do it, the people must.”

Sincerely,

Judy Scott Feldman, Ph.D.
President
National Coalition to Save Our Mall

P.S. Please forward this message to a good friend or two. Ask them to make a tax exempt contribution, too – no matter how small. It’s their Mall, too.
