NCPC Cancels Meeting to Review the National Park Service’s Washington Monument Project

Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002

Dear National Coalition to Save Our Mall Members and Friends:

We have just received word that the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) has CANCELLED the special August 15th meeting to review the National Park Service’s Washington Monument project. The NCPC will NOT issue a Staff Report as it usually does in advance of its meeting.

We are very grateful to the NCPC staff for personally contacting us yesterday and this morning about these developments. In-house meetings yesterday and this morning concluded just minutes ago with the final decision to cancel.

We are surprised and delighted at this development. It would appear that the NCPC and other federal agencies are taking seriously the controversy over the Park Service’s plans and the absurd Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). We do not yet know what this means in terms of the timetable for the project. We’ll send out an update as soon as we have new information.

In the meantime, a few moments of relief and gratitude.
