National Mall Coalition’s new PDF explains why and offers a way forward
View the National Mall Coalition’s new PDF sharing the history of the Mall, considered America’s Stage for Democracy, and covering the challenges facing the Mall and those in charge of its upkeep and development. With an existential flooding threat, with more proposed memorials and museums yet few sites available, with numerous agencies, institutions, and congressional committees overseeing the Mall that seldom communicate and coordinate – more than a score of them — the Mall needs attention now, in other words, a 3rd century plan in time for the nation’s 250th in 2026. (The last plan dates to 1902 and updated and expanded L’Enfant’s original one.)
In this PDF the Coalition calls for a commission appointed by the President, by Congress, or by the Sesquicentennial Commission, whichever can move quickly, composed of architects, landscape architects, historians, and other relevant interests to offer recommendations in time for celebrations on the Mall in 2026, which will include the Smithsonian Museums. The report should guide future development, from expanding the Mall to identifying sites for additions to exploring how more of the story of our country can be presented. This is a call for action, NOW.
