2018 Annual Appeal

The National Mall Needs Your Support…

December 14, 2018

Dear Friends of the National Mall,

Since 2000, the National Mall Coalition has been raising public awareness of the role of the National Mall in American democracy — for First Amendment activities, civic and cultural events, and recreation. The past year has seen a significant number of these events, with more to come.

Please help us continue to keep the “public” in this most cherished and vital public space — the National Mall — with your tax-deductible contribution.

This year, we alerted you to, and spoke out against, misguided proposals to charge fees for First Amendment gatherings and restrict areas on the Mall where demonstrations can take place. We collaborated with recreational groups to protect, in the face of proposed bans, the Mall’s importance to local residents as a lively venue for recreation.

When Hurricane Florence was roaring towards DC, we reminded you of the history of floods — including the 2006 stormwater flooding that devastated Mall museums and government buildings — that continue to pose a huge threat. Our own innovative proposal, the National Mall Underground floodwater reservoir, moved a step closer to feasibility. DC Council asked the US Army Corps of Engineers to do a technical review of the Underground and the Corps released its positive report in September. We are still hard at work on all these projects and have much more to do in 2019!

You can make your tax-deductible donation HERE.
